Downtown Colorado Springs with the Carew Family

Families Lifestyle

It was the best of times. It was the worst of times.

Why, you ask.

Well, this family photo session in downtown Colorado Springs included BOTH ice-cream (hooray!) and a wasp sting (boo.). We started out enjoying some amazingly vibrant fall leaves. Things were going well until sweet big-sister Isabel discovered that those beautiful leaves were housing some of last year’s wasps that WOULD NOT DIE! (Remember the fall of the wasp attacks??) The brave girl endured a painful sting to her finger and then continued to smile (after a few rightfully-earned tears) for the rest of the photos there.

Thankfully, mama Shannon had requested that we end our photo session with a few lifestyle-type photos at Josh and John’s ice-cream. Not only was it the perfect place for some fun photos, it was also a great spot for rewarding a kid who had just had a wasp stinger in her finger. Things really did turn out okay in the end, but next time I’ll take ALLL the ice-cream and none of the wasps, thank you.

I really loved that Shannon wanted to add a little variety to her photos this year by taking the family to do something fun. I really was a great way to capture some sweet interactions and genuine smiles. If you’ve got a fun idea for your family photos, I’d love to hear about it. I’m 99% sure that we can make anything happen!

Downtown Colorado Springs || The Buteyn Family
For her family photos, Jill wanted color and texture and space to play. I could think of no better place than this little alleyway in downtown Colorado Springs. I've shot here many times before, and I love how each family always makes it their own. Although I may repeat this location once or twice a year, no two shoots ever look the same. The Buteyn family was game for anything and was more than willing to try a few of my goofy ideas. As you'll see, we had a lot of laughs. (However, I have a feeling that this family laughs together often without my help.) And if you're looking for a great summer read, you should look Jill up! She's a fa ...

Ryland is One [A Family Cake Smash Session]
I was so excited when Amy contacted me last month to say that her little guy was turning one and ask if I would be interested in photographing a cake smash session for him. We decided to incorporate a little family photoshoot first and then it was cake time. Little Ryland wasn't too shy and sure did enjoy his first taste of sugar. I was extra impressed with big brother Connor who waited very patiently to be told that he could join in on the cake eating - and then it became a whole family affair. Ryland did not mind sharing his cake one bit and was really just the happiest camper for the whole session. Happy birthday, Ryland! I hope you ...

The Murray Family
The Murray Family photo shoot ended up being a two-part photo shoot. Just as we were beginning our session at Rockledge Ranch, a giant storm started rolling in. We did our best to hold our own, but the winds were nearly sweeping us off our feet! We postponed for a later date and a new location. Good 'ol Colorado weather sure likes to keep us photographers on our toes! In the end, it all worked out and I enjoyed the opportunity to meet up with this sweet family TWICE! :) Their kids are beautiful and are so full of kindness - and it sure was fun to swap stories of our travels to Ethiopia. Thank you, Murray Family, for your patience and fl ...
